7 Campus Activities You’ve Overlooked

campus-activities

One of the easiest ways to build new skills and make new connections at school is to join a student club or organization.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the most commonly found but often overlooked campus activities to help you find something that enhances your college experience.

1. Honorary Academic Organizations

These organizations are typically related to your academic discipline, a campus department, or national honors societies.

Examples include:

  • Beta Alpha Psi (for accounting majors)
  • Parks & Recreation (for those interested in pursuing this career)
  • Pre-Law club (for students interested in going on to law school and future employment in the legal industry)

Find out whether your program has a group associated with it. Consider joining as a way to increase your network and learn about what your future could look like after you graduate.

2. Advocacy

Advocacy groups help inform people about those who face adversity.

To Write Love On Her Arms is one such group—it focuses on educating others about depression and suicide.

These groups take on many causes, such as mental health, autism, disabilities, and more.

3. Cultural/Ethnic

Every college has a diverse mix of students.

That’s why registered student organizations have been formed to celebrate many cultures and ethnicities.

Each population may have its own group, such as the NAACP or the United International Association.

These organizations help promote a more well-rounded worldview for you and your fellow students.

4. Entertainment

Are you a social butterfly?

Think about joining a group that helps entertain people!

Whether it’s music, art, or event production, one of these groups may be perfect for your talents.

5. Governing

Maybe you’d like to help draft and implement policies for the collection of student organizations on campus.

Universities feature umbrella organizations that govern things like residence halls, Greek social sororities, and campus hospitality.

Student government officials can even have a voice in campus administration in these groups.

6. Leadership

Just because you’re a student doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader.

Leadership organizations recognize student leadership through service and scholarship.

Examples of organizations you’ll find in this category are the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the National Society of Leadership and Success.

7. Performance

Similar to the entertainment category, organizations focused on performance allow members to be creative.

Types of activities in this group include:

  • Dancing
  • Theatre
  • Martial arts
  • Singing
  • Playing music
  • Comedy

By no means is this all of the campus activities you can participate in, but we hope you’ll at least try an activity here that you hadn’t thought of before.
